'Media Mediation: Media, People and Governance'

AMF_confab

The Asia Media Forum presents a complete report on the proceedings of "Media Mediation: Media, People and Governance", organised in strategic partnership with ActionAid, on Dec 17-19, 2006 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The conference, which brought together almost a hundred journalists, academics and civil society representatives from the Asia-Pacific region, discussed issues affecting the media and society in Asia today.

Among the topics discussed include the role of media as active partners of civil society and as agents for social change, media education from the perspective of practitioners, the need to strengthen regional media and to develop a syllabus for journalism education that reflect local realities, among others.

A seminar on globalisation of media discussed practitioners' concerns that media, although benefiting from globalisation in many ways, can be used to foster hidden agenda in the corporate, political, social, economic, and cultural settings.

The "Rise of New Media: Challenges and Opportunities", meanwhile, tackled all forms of censorships that hamper media's independence and freedom to report about relevant issues in the region.
